Classroom Distractions

Forget about smartphones, cute football players and pretty cheerleaders, when it comes to classroom distractions, experts say parents should be more concerned with their kids’ empty stomachs. A recent study published in Childhood Obesity found that the snacks tweens and teens bring to school to satisfy their grumbling guts are failing to make the grade when it comes to nutrition. In fact, according to experts, the popularity of the following snack foods is the reason many students suffer from behavioral problems such as hyperactivity: Cheetos: No surprise here. One-ounce of the neon orange puffs contains 150 calories, 10 grams of … Continue reading

Don’t Cry in My Cheetos

Thousands of tweens and teens across the country are choking up when they dig into a bag of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, and it’s not because the spicy snack burns on the way down. Rather, some school districts are banning the crunchy corn puffs, claiming the cheesy treat is hazardous to kids’ health. The news has brought some students to tears, while others are flamin’ mad that school administrators would make such a bold move. According to CBS News, the Cheetos brouhaha started when a health teacher from Lyndon B. Johnson Middle School in Albuquerque, New Mexico, sent a note home … Continue reading

Back-to-School Breakfast Ideas

Now that the new school year is underway, my days as a short order cook are over… at least when it comes to breakfast. This summer, I could have easily earned employee of the month honors as a flapjack flipper at IHOP, but instead chose to use my pancake-making skills to keep my 7-year-old happy and full. Kids need a healthy breakfast in order for their bodies and brains to function properly. However, during the school year, this important morning meal often gets skipped in the interest of saving time or scoring a few more minutes of sleep. Ironically, eating … Continue reading

Avoid a Summer Bummer

When you’re a kid, nothing ruins summer vacation faster than being sick. I speak from experience. When I was 10 years old I got chicken pox five days after school let out for summer break. Talk about a summer bummer. Then again, taking care of a sick kid during summer vacation is no picnic for a parent either. When you’re on summer break, staying up late, traveling to new and exciting places, and enjoying life minus a regular routine, it’s easy to forgo healthy eating habits, slack on regular hand washing and avoid other good habits. This, of course, can … Continue reading

Disney Ditches Junk Food

The House of Mouse is going healthy… what’s a parent to do? Now where I am going to find out which toys are being featured in McDonald’s Happy Meals? Apparently, not the the Disney Channel. Newsflash: Walt Disney is banning all junk food ads on programs that target children. According to reports, Disney has become the first major media company to nix ads for unhealthy food and beverages on Disney XD and during Saturday morning programs on Disney-owned ABC television stations. The company’s push to support nutritional options for kids will also be implemented on Disney Channel and Disney Junior, … Continue reading

Finger Food

Would you rather have your child give the finger or get it? Neither is ideal, especially if said finger is sandwiched between thinly sliced roast beef and a toasted sesame seed bun. U to the G-H! Parents are programmed with a natural instinct to protect their offspring, but when you are up against random human fingers popping up in your child’s fast food sandwich, even the most seasoned mom or dad may be at a loss for words. Just ask Jamie Vail. The Michigan mom nearly fainted last week when her 14-year-old son found a piece of a human finger … Continue reading

Eating Out with Kids

My 7-year-old constantly begs to eat at Fazoli’s. Unfortunately for her, I refuse to pay five bucks for a fist-sized portion of spaghetti that I can make and serve at home for about 50 cents per serving. Needless to say, my kid doesn’t get her Fazoli’s fix very often. Nothing against Fazoli’s; I’m actually not a fan of kids’ restaurant menus in general. I am an equal opportunity hater. To me, there’s just something wrong about having to fork over $3 to $7 at a restaurant for my kid to dine on a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, hot dog … Continue reading
